Employer responsibilities

Under the Tools For Your Trade voucher initiative, you are responsible for:
  • confirming the eligibility of your Australian Apprentice to receive a tool kit under the Tools For Your Trade voucher initiative;
  • ensuring all forms supplied by the Tools For Your Trade team are completed correctly and returned for processing;
  • ensuring the Tools For Your Trade voucher is redeemed on or before 31 October 2009;
  • buying, in consultation with the Australian Apprentice, a tool kit appropriate to that trade;
  • ensuring Purchase Verification Forms are returned to Tools For Your Trade before 31 December 2009;
  • allowing the Australian Apprentice to use the tool kit in the conduct of their work; and
  • transferring ownership of the tool kit to the Australian Apprentice at the nine-month point of the Australian Apprenticeship.
Voucher cards must not be used if the apprentice is no longer employed by you.

The Australian Government reserves the right to withhold or refuse issuance of a voucher card, and/or to require repayment of tool kits purchased by employers.

Such action may be a result of any circumstance in which it is considered that:
  • the Employer or apprenticeship program does not provide a genuine or appropriate training opportunity for the Australian Apprentice;
  • there has been a fraud committed on the Australian Government; or there has been a manipulation of the Initiative Guidelines to maximise tool kit purchases which would otherwise not be payable.

Recommended records to be held by the employer
The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations recommends that employers maintain the following records, for their own taxation purposes, showing the:
  • date the voucher was received;
  • Australian Apprentice for whom the voucher relates;
  • tool supplier(s) name(s);
  • amount paid for the tool kit;
  • type of tools purchased; and
  • date on which the tool kit became the property of the Australian Apprentice.
Insurance matters
Employers should make their own enquiries concerning insurance matters arising from the purchase of tools under the voucher Initiative.

The Australian Government does not accept any responsibility for the quality or suitability of tools purchased through the voucher Initiative.

Taxation matters
Purchase of tools under this voucher Initiative may have taxation implications for your organisation.

You should seek independent advice regarding your taxation position in this matter.
