Important information for the new Tools For Your Trade payment initiative
17 August 2009

The Australian Government has introduced a new method of payment for Australian Apprentices under the new Tools For Your Trade payment initiative. Payments to apprentices under the new initiative will commence from 1 January 2010.

Please note that due to these changes all purchase transations using the Tools For Your Trade voucher must be finalised by 31 October 2009. Failure to authorise any sales by the 31 October 2009 may prevent payments being processed under the Tools For Your Trade voucher initiative.

Important changes to the Tools For Your Trade initiative
13 May 2009

Following the 2009-10 Federal Budget announcement, the Tools For Your Trade voucher initiative has effectively ceased as at 12 May 2009. The Tools For Your Trade voucher initiative will transform into a new Tools For Your Trade payment initiative, commencing on 1 January 2010.

The new Tools For Your Trade payment initiative combines and extends three existing separate support initiatives (the Tools For Your Trade voucher initiative, Apprenticeship Wage Top-Up and the Commonwealth Trade Learning Scholarship) into one new payment totalling $3800 under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program.

The Tools For Your Trade payment initiative will be paid to apprentices and trainees in five tax exempt cash payments over the life of their Australian Apprenticeship, to help meet the costs of tools, books, protective clothing and fees.

Eligible Australian Apprentices commencing or recommencing their qualification from 13 May 2009 may be eligible for the Tools For Your Trade payment initiative. The new payment will be available to Australian Apprentices in selected trade and agricultural occupations and, if in rural and regional Australia, horticultural occupations.

Transitional arrangements for Australian Apprentices are still being finalised. Further information will be available from Australian Apprenticeships Centres closer to the implementation date.

Employers and Australian Apprentices can contact their nearest Australian Apprenticeships Centre.
